Getting a Clue When it Comes to Networking

from Ramen Noodles, Rent and Resumes by kristen The term “networking” gets a lot of slack. Most new grads are eager to start networking but aren’t sure how. And if you’ve been in the professional world for a few years, you probably don’t keep up with networking unless you have been recently unemployed. Regardless, I enjoyed this article, “Thirteen Networking Mistakes.” In it, the author discusses being “clueless” about networking. I didn’t smarten up about the goal of networking–or the importance of selecting the right network–until I dove in. I attended a meeting of a local media/PR group a few […]

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover and Other Things

Just like there are 50 ways to leave your lover there are 50 ways to use Twitter as a job search tool. I know that many of you have not jumped on the tweeting bandwagon with quite the same enthusiasm as Facebook but, if I’ve said it once I’ve said it *50* times, you shouldn’t ignore Twitter. Every where I turn these days people are talking about Twitter. Just yesterday in the New York Times there was an article discussing how to use Twitter for work, not diversion. Among other things Twitter is increasingly becoming a place to help with […]

Always wear pants, know where you are, tell all your friends

Last week at the presentation from the Intern Queen, she gave several great pointers and tips regarding interviewing. One of which was about the increasingly popular Skype interview. Here is my take on her tips: Always Wear Pants: This is a good lesson for life in general but we’ll just stick to the reasons why in regards to interviewing. You may think because you are sitting down in front of desk you won’t be able to see your legs but this is not a guarantee so let’s just err on the side of caution and put some pants on. Be […]

Big Brother is Watching

Beware…you are being watched from the moment you walk in to the interview. From the Culture and Manners Institute: A woman approached me after a talk in Oklahoma and said, “I am the receptionist in my office. The hiring manager has asked me to keep an eye on the job candidates in the waiting room and report back to him which ones are talking on their cell phones, checking messages, or texting. Those are the candidates we do not hire.” Avoid using your cell phone or text messaging while sitting in the waiting room before an interview or even a […]
