On Campus Interviewing

It’s post-Expo and we are in full swing with interviews on campus! We talk a lot about tips for interviewing: what to wear, questions to ask, but we also need to discuss another topic: the ethics of interviewing on campus. An interview is a business commitment; once you apply and are granted an interview, it is expected that you will attend. It is our policy that, if you are a no-show for an interview, you will be suspended from the BRIDGE immediately. The Career Development Center does not advocate missing classes for interviews and we recommend that you do your [...]

Always wear pants, know where you are, tell all your friends, and other Skype Interviewing Tips

Re-sharing some tips I learned from the Intern Queen when she came to campus (way back when) regarding interviewing and the increasingly popular Skype interview. Here is my take on her tips: Always Wear Pants: This is a good lesson for life in general but we’ll just stick to the reasons why in regards to interviewing. You may think because you are sitting down in front of desk you won’t be able to see your legs but this is not a guarantee so let’s just err on the side of caution and put some pants on. Be Aware Your Surroundings: [...]

Behavioral Interviews

We discussed Case Interviews, which is all well and good but not everyone will be subjected to a case interview so now I’d like to turn our attention to Behavioral Interviews. Behavioral Interviews, or Behavioral-Based Interviews (BBI), is a technique used by employers to learn about your past behavior in particular situations to help determine how you would perform on the job and fit into the organization. “Enthusiasts believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior…more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior [...]

What IS a Case Interview?

On-Campus Recruiting is starting back up and I thought now would be a good time to talk about Case Interviews. You may have heard this term thrown around but do you really know what a case interview is? If you are hoping to go into the management, consulting or the investment banking area then you definitely NEED TO KNOW because a case interview will almost definitely be a part of your interview process. In a case interview the job applicant is given a question, situation, problem or challenge and asked to solve it. The case problem  or challenge is often [...]

Are Your Listening Skills Killing Your Chances Of Landing A Job?

With On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) in full swing we thought this post from Glassdoor.com Blog by Debra Wheatman was very pertinent. Enjoy! Good Luck! Schedule a Mock Interview! Come to Interview Tips (every Monday at 5pm)! In this article Debra explains, “It is normal and expected that you will be slightly nervous. The art of listening should not be diminished! Oftentimes, people tend to talk more when they are nervous. During an interview this can work against you.” She goes on to explain the other problem with failing to listen, “you may miss some important clues or red flags related to [...]

Hitting with a spoon? Deal Breaker. And other Interview Do’s & Don’ts you can learn from toddlers

A fun article in honor of the first day of OCR You all should know by now that I LOVE NPR! Yup. I say it loud and I say it proud: I love NPR! I love it even more when I can use it for work (like we did when discussing Elevator Pitches). Well, courtesy of NPR comes yet another post from me, this time about preschoolers and interviewing. It really made me laugh. Then it made me feel bad for these little tykes. My preschool days were carefree bliss of making play dough (and of course taste testing it), [...]
