LinkedIn is considered universal; however, Twitter is rapidly growing. Come learn how you can best use this social media to stay current and move your career forward, presented by Megan Wolleben and Dr. Julee Bertsch. We will go over the basics of Twitter, how to set up a professional profile, and how to use Twitter strategically for your career.

The program will be held on  Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at the Madison Hotel Pfeiffer Suite, One Convent Road, Morristown, New Jersey.

For students, including graduating seniors, the event is free if you register on the BRIDGE by June 10th.

Current students and 2013 graduates are invited to join Alumni Career Services for a networking event for alumni, parents and students on June 6th in San Francisco. The program will focus on volunteering and sitting on boards and also highlight what students are doing at Bucknell through The Office of Civic Engagement. We will feature a panel discussion on how you can volunteer and join boards to network, give back and move your career forward.

Speakers include:

• Molly Burke ’10, Co-founder and Executive Director of Bicycles Against Poverty, a Bucknell originated non-profit, will talk about starting up an organization and working with volunteers.
• Brian Mulligan ’08 will talk about his work with Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
• Eric Willner ’10 will talk about his work with CoachArt, an organization that improves the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and their siblings by providing free lessons in the arts and athletics.
• Melissa Plaisance ’82, P’13, Vice-President, Finance & Investor Relations at Safeway, Inc. and member of the Bucknell Alumni Board of Directors, will talk about her career and contributions.
• Janice Butler, Director of Civic Engagement at Bucknell University, will provide an update on student volunteer contributions around the world.

If you don’t find anything that works for you, then you can think about the many short term job opportunities available. You can volunteer, work abroad, or work in the US doing meaningful work that you might not want to make your career, but you would like to spend a few months doing. Idealist has jobs, volunteer opportunities, internships, and resources to help find and secure the perfect opportunity. You can search for types of jobs, keywords, and location. Daily listings of jobs relevant to your interests can be emailed to you. It is a great way to connect with your favorite organizations.

Backdoor Jobs or short-term job adventures….
Whether you want to work in the US or abroad, you can find a long list of exciting short term opportunities on this website. There are jobs in the great outdoors, or focus on the environment and education, jobs on the ranch, opportunities focusing on sustainable living, and many more.

Jobs to Careers allows you to refine your search to a specific city, then provides a list of short and long term job opportunities available there.

Transitions Abroad
Transitions Abroad has many opportunities for jobs abroad including: Au Pair, Farm jobs, student work, summer jobs, travel jobs, and teaching English abroad.

Unicef
Take some time to do something meaningful and work with UNICEF. This section of their website focuses on the short term opportunities available, working and volunteering. If you want to make a difference in the lives of children, consider working with UNICEF before applying to a full time job.

The goal of the panel is to inform people on how they can get involved in the social sector— whether it’s by serving on a nonprofit Board, volunteering in a meaningful way, or starting your own nonprofit. Individuals will learn about how to effectively volunteer, what serving on a Board entails, tips on nonprofit tax management, and the path to social entrepreneurship.

• Social entrepreneurship: what it takes to build your own nonprofit and how to scale impact when you’re still a growing organization
• Nonprofit partnerships: when does it make sense?
• Taxes: the 501(c)3 application, follow-up applications, and the responsibilities. Tax information will also be included about how to claim your tax deductible donations.

#1 is that you have access to career services for a lifetime (and free!) so if you still need some help, now or later in life, Bucknell will be there for you. Besides being available for counseling, ACS also offers really great programs, networking opportunities, and webinars.

#2 We are still here for you and open throughout finals. Whether you are still sending out resumes (which is totally fine! – a lot of industries don’t hire as early as others) or you are negotiating offers you can make an appointment with us during finals week or stop in for Quick Questions M-F, 1:30-3:30.

#3 You can always come back! Homecoming will be here before you know it. I swear. And there are plenty of opportunities to come back to help students out they way other young alumni came back to help you; consider coming back for Alumni Panels, attending Career Fairs (on the other side of the booth), doing a @BisonINCareers twitter take-over, hosting an externship! There are many ways to stay connected.

OK and there are some sad parts…I’m not going to lie….college is over. At least you have a lifetime of memories to get you through when things get tough in the “real world,” right?

I am not going to fill this whole posts with lasts…because at one end there is always a new beginning, right? There are many fun firsts that come with this day of lasts, like: your first real job, your first paycheck, your first apartment, your first 401(k) – OK clearly I’ve been in the working world too long if I list this as an exciting first…

Remember your first day at Bucknell? I’m sure you watched your parents drive away with trepidation, anxiety, excitement and uncertainty. After graduation you will drive away with your parents with similar feelings and emotions but look how far those initial feelings took you and imagine how far you will go now…it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s new…and we’ll always be here for you!

Luckily the green industry is highly diverse and is growing daily.  “Green Careers” can encompass various industries such as: conservation, education, communication, environmental consulting, environmental management and planning, and parks and recreation, to name a few.  Employers include academia, government, corporations, public and private research firms, nonprofits and grassroots organizations.
