Peer Picks by Sophie Hattery ’16, CDC Marketing and Social Media Specialist, are back!

With one of our semi-annual career fairs coming up next Tuesday, January 28th in Gerhard Field House, you should be checking the internship due dates of companies that will be there. As a side corollary, you should be reviewing your resume and planning your professional outfit as well! Luckily for you, I am going to highlight a couple of companies’ internship due dates that will be at the fair in a few seconds!

1. Clark Construction Internship

2. Cambridge Associates Summer Associate Program

For you engineering, architecture, and construction management majors based in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, Clark Construction is offering an internship in Bethesda, Maryland. The company seeks to let students explore the basics of construction management. You will find yourself on a project team performing tasks in field engineering, project management, or acquisitions. Field engineering provides an understanding of how the building comes together from the ground up. You will be able to lay the groundwork for projects and coordinate the “nuts and bolts” of work on site. As for project management, it provides an understanding of both the day-to-day and long term business and financial management associated with construction projects. Finally, acquisitions or front end departments include pre-construction, estimating and purchasing. All provide an understanding of how Clark develops and maintains relationships in order to acquire new opportunities.

You will be responsible for supporting the project management team with subcontractor and supplier coordination, material tracking, file management, document control (submittals, RFIs and change orders) and progress reporting. In addition, you will work with field supervision to assist with project layout, setting control lines, surveying, construction drawing and trade coordination, verification of field conditions and quality control. Last but not least, you will get the chance to participate in Clark Corporate University classes, mentorship activities, and company-sponsored events. If this internship sounds great to you, do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, January 27th!

As for any rising senior who wants to go into consulting and is located in Boston, Massachusetts, Arlington, Virginia, or Menlo Park, California, Cambridge Associates, LLC is offering an internship as well. The 10-week Summer Associate program will provide immediate exposure to the investment and financial world and an opportunity to work alongside Consulting Associates with a range of experiences. An orientation and training program introduces Summer Associates to the firm’s consulting practice and familiarizes them with our data, research resources, client work and staff.  You would be assigned a Consulting Associate mentor who serves as your key resource while with the firm.

The expectations that you will be held to are that you will be assigned to work alongside Consulting Associates on current client portfolios and research projects, and will assume a great deal of individual responsibility on these accounts.  Typical projects and responsibilities may include gathering and analyzing historical asset allocation, spending and performance data; evaluating financial histories; analyzing investment managers’ portfolios; and preparing exhibits and other presentation documentation. If you are interested in applying, do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, January 27th as well!
