Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect 200 Dollars

Follow directions when applying for opportunities… We recently learned from an employer who was advertising an opportunity on the BRIDGE that only 1 of 7 Bucknell students who applied for his organizations job opportunity followed the 3 steps required for the position, which were outlined on the BRIDGE job description.  His take on this was that if students are not able to follow directions in the application process then how will he feel confident that they will follow directions well on the job.  To him it was an indicator of work ethic and follow through.  You can’t really argue with […]

Student Perspective – The BRIDGE: Bursting the Bubble

Bucknell has often been referred to as a bubble. It is a campus filled with brick buildings, athletic facilities and breath-taking views of the Pennsylvania landscape. Within these warm brick buildings are numerous services provided by the University in an effort to burst this bubble. Of these services, the best is arguably the Bridge. The Bridge is more than a job application site. Its name truly suits its function as it connects Bucknell undergraduate students to Alumni, career-oriented campus events, and professional opportunities that reach far beyond the Lewisburg city limits. Even more so, the Bridge is easily accessible and […]

The entry-level guide to office etiquette

In a world of unpaid internships and distracted managers, how’s a young professional to learn? Five essential insights to surviving as you start out. By Nadira A. Hira NEW YORK (Fortune) — A few years before I began writing “The Gig,” when I was starting out as one of the starry-eyed Gen Y staffers I now write about (and still am), I walked to the office printer barefoot. Granted, it was in an office where wearing short sleeves constituted a statement. (Not Fortune, you gossips.) And to my credit, I’d taken my shoes off under my desk and simply forgotten […]

Internships with Early Deadlines

You may have noticed that not all industries recruit and advertise their internship (and job) opportunities at the same times. Many large financial, accounting, and engineering companies do their hiring in the fall semesters, while government tends to hire in early winter, and arts/media in the spring. Other industries fall throughout the year as well. I encourage you to do some research on your industry to see when you should be anticipating being busy with applications.
