Research Says: Use Career Services to Increase Likelihood of Job Offers

Based on a NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) 2010 Student Survey, there is a strong link between the use of career services and a student’s ability to get a job offer. Here is what the results revealed: The more frequently a senior used career services, the more likely he/she would receive a job offer. The likelihood of getting a job offer increased with the frequency of use (those who used the career center four or more times a semester were more likely to have job offers than those who used it once a semester). Among those who had […]

The Importance of Online Personal Brands

Students in Elaine Young’s marketing management class at Champlain College are required to brand something ultimately critical to their future career success—themselves. As part of the class, Young requires each student to identify something he or she is passionate about, build their online personal brands through social media, and track their success. “My overall goal is that they learn the tools, help one another, and get visible online all with the intent that they get jobs,” explains Young, associate professor of marketing. “It’s an interesting process for the students to figure out what they are passionate enough about to keep […]

Things to do over the summer: Upgrade Your Bare-Bones LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn could be one of your best job-search strategies right now, provided you have more than a bare-bones LinkedIn Profile. Hiring managers and recruiters are searching LinkedIn Profiles for job candidates more than ever before because it is cost-effective and typically yields higher quality candidates than the general job boards like Monster and CareerBuilder. LinkedIn statistics reveal that nearly half of the 66 million+ LinkedIn members are from the United States and account for more than 42 percent of the global LI traffic. Only a little more than 5 years old, LinkedIn has become a hot social networking tool for […]

Inc. Article about SheFinds’ as seen on MTV Hired

Well somehow we missed all the buzz leading up to the premiere of MTV’s Hired series but it was just yesterday so I think you can cut us some slack. That being said, I did want to point out this article from Inc. Magazine, which features an interview with Michelle Madhok, founder of SheFinds.com. Michelle Madhok, founder of SheFinds.com, a New York City company that operates a shopping blog about fashion and beauty trends and deals, needed to hire an editorial assistant. “MTV Hired,” a new documentary series following recent graduates, wanted to film a small business that was hiring. […]

Get Off Facebook and Get an Internship!

A lot of articles are now stating that employers are going to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media outlets to search for viable talent. So, does that mean that all you have to do is set a status message that you’re looking for a job and then add your resume to your profile? NO! Believe it or not employers are not going to be banging down your door if you’re a passive job hunter like that. Internships are still the way to go if you want to get noticed. Internships not only help you to gain relevant experience, but […]

We’re excited to see what MTV Hired is all about, as well as to find out […]

Multilingual Boost

With the current open marketplace, having global experience and being bilingual is not only a skill but a requirement. Learning a new language can be a great asset – from endless job opportunities to attracting new customers. Betty Liu, host of Bloomberg TV’s “In the Loop,” attributes her edge in the workplace to her language skills – she speaks Mandarin Chinese and some Cantonese. “It always sets you apart from the rest. Employers are always looking for that extra dimension,” says Liu. “If it wasn’t for my language skills, I wouldn’t have gotten my job as an international correspondent in […]

Have you ever been unsure about what you want to do after you graduate? I’m sure a ton of us have. The best way to figure out what you’re interested in is to talk with alumni to get some insight into different industries!
