I came across this great blog post on Career Hub…a source I regularly go to for ideas on our own blog. The posts I find here are always creative and filled with great information. Now this post is aimed at the out of college job seeker but much of what is suggested can be for both the new job or internship seeker and the “seasoned” job seeker. The only thing I will add to the list below is to make sure you take advantage of the Career Development Center here on campus. A lot of the suggestions and exercises offered […]

Student applications are encouraged for Katherine Mabis McKenna Environmental Internships for the summer of 2011. Interns receive a $3000 stipend and may arrange a free residence hall room during the summer participation period. Successful applicants will be expected to engage in an independent research project of approximately 10 weeks duration under the sponsorship of a faculty member. Students must still be enrolled at Bucknell; graduating seniors are not eligible unless they have committed to attending graduate school at Bucknell. Project proposals from a wide variety of disciplines will be considered for funding. Research efforts should fall under the general heading […]

Another great installment of advice from Brittany Waser ’12. As winter break is rapidly approaching (and I may have been counting down since returning from Thanksgiving break), most likely the last thing on your mind after finishing exams is resuming your summer internship or job search. While it may seem ridiculous to be thinking of where you will be in June amidst the freezing cold weather of winter, especially for the fast paced world of a college student who may not know what they are eating for dinner let alone what they will be doing in six months, it pays […]

I came across this great, short and sweet article from Heather R. Huhman’s blog and thought I’d share her quick tips. For those December grads these 5 points are really good to keep in mind as you find yourself in the “real world” now, but these aren’t only good for December grads so seniors listen up! I remember when I was an entry-level job seeker…seems like only yesterday! In the early days, I definitely made all of the following misconceptions (and more): 1. Your cover letter and resume are about you. Nope. In fact, you should use the word “I” […]

By Katrina Hefele ’13 “Hi parents, how are you doing today? Good? Good. Oh yeah that’s right, I did have to declare my major today. No, I’m not an engineer, I chose to follow my own path and not become an engineer just because you are one. Why are you yelling at me? There are so many things that I can do with this major! What can I do with it? OK, let me tell you…” Have you gone through this conversation before? Well, I have and let me tell you that I was extremely glad that I work at […]

As you head into to finals and then off for winter break we wanted to offer you some tips on networking and internships by your fellow peer Brittany Waser ’12. Through my internship search and summer job search I have found that one of the most valuable tips I have received is the importance of networking. Students dread networking and keeping in contact with employers ( I know I did!), especially when the end goal of a job seems far off. Often intimidating and easily ignored, networking can be the key to unlocking a seemingly unattainable summer position. This is […]

These days, the professional cover letter has taken a backseat to its much more popular cousin, the resume. Although it is often seen as stuffy, antiquated, and even frivolous, the cover letter actually has the power to establish the all-important.
