Peer Picks: Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) & Trustify

Photo - HatteryFor this week, my peer picks all are companies located in a location near and dear to my heart – Washington, D.C. (check out the city guide for DC too!).  I may be biased, but it is an amazing place to live post-grad. I love how it is a city full of opportunity, a compromise between being a concrete jungle and a grass filled city, and is easily accessible to Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia: both places that are known for night life, shopping, and other recreational activities. Now that I am done persuading you of the fun downtime you can delve into after work, I will address the internship and job opportunities at your disposal, courtesy of the Bridge.

  1. Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) Summer Internship – November 20 Deadline
  2. Trustify Public Relations Associate – November 22 Deadline

For more than 30 years, the Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA), a major tax-exempt, nonprofit, and nonpartisan national research and information organization, has offered internships in Washington, D.C. in the fields of U.S., Latin American, and Canadian relations. These internships provide practical, entry-level experience regarding a variety of political, economic, diplomatic, and trade issues. The Council also provides young scholars with excellent exposure to the policy making process. COHA internships, which are available throughout the year, are entirely voluntary and are highly competitive (with summer positions being the most sought after). Interns play an integral role in COHA’s activities, which include the following: issuing statements and providing commentary to the print and electronic media; submitting articles on hemispheric issues to regional and national media; monitoring human rights and press freedom violations; promoting constructive U.S. policy initiatives; formulating viable alternatives that seek a diplomatic rather than a military solution to disputes; attending briefings by visiting Latin American dignitaries; and surveying legislation focused on social justice and the expansion of authentic democratic institutions. If this sounds like somewhere where you would like to kick off your career, please do not forget to apply by November 20th!

My second peer pick is a venture capital-funded startup, Trustify. As a Public Relations Associate, you will be in charge of increasing awareness and developing and enviable corporate image by developing and executing effective communication and media relations programs. Specifically, your potential tasks could involve developing a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget and tactics, forging a media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast and online media, coordinating all public relations activities, directing social media team to engage audiences across traditional and new media, leveraging existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within business and industry media, managing media inquiries and interview requests, creating content for press releases, byline articles and keynote presentations, monitoring, analyzing and communicating PR results on a quarterly basis, evaluating opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships and advertising on an on-going basis, building relationships with thought leaders to grow industry awareness, maintaining a keen understanding of industry trends affecting clients and make appropriate recommendations regarding communication strategy surrounding them, and finally, placing Trustify executives as speakers at relevant conferences. If you could see yourself being a PR associate, definitely be sure to apply on the Bridge by November 22nd!
