Peer Peeks: Smithsonian Institute & Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation

vladThis week peer picks from Vladimir ’16:

1. The Smithsonian Institute

2. The Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation

After some refreshing time during spring break, there’s still time left to apply for a productive summer internship. This week we’re exploring some opportunities that sound like a lot of fun: the Smithsonian Institute and the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation.

Have a passion for museums, research and enjoy being self-directed? The Smithsonian Institute is a group of research centers and museums administered by the U.S Government. Within the Institute, the Asian Pacific American (APA) program is offering internship opportunities for the summer of 2015 in Washington D.C. Interns in this program will learn more about the museum field, participate in the development of upcoming APA exhibitions under a supervisor who will encourage the intern to analyze, reflect and relate the work at hand with academic, professional and personal goals.

What struck me was that there was a strong sense of personal responsibility expected in that interns are provided with a wide variety of resources, including computer, phone, access to Smithsonian collections and other resources as well as guidance in order to complete their research.

In order to apply, you need to go to the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System at https://solaa.si.edu/solaa/SOLAAHome.html. A 1-2 page cover letter, a resume, a college writing sample that reflects your best research skills, a research project proposal, college transcripts and two letters of recommendations are necessary. Applications for this particular internship are due on Friday, March 27th. The internship is unpaid but eligible for academic credit. The Smithsonian Institute has a variety of other internships as well with deadlines ranging from March to April. All of them are visible through Bucknell’s BRIDGE!

Another internship opportunity for the technically and system design oriented students that would look great on any resume is the one from the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. Interns at Sikorsky have the opportunity to hands-on work with the Health Management Systems department and be exposed to activities such as research, data analysis, algorithm development and testing, parametric and dynamic system modeling. Being exposed to these areas would provide a variety of highly marketable skills to any candidate pursuing a career in the Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace field. The internship takes place in the town of State College, PA. They are looking for Mechanical Engineers with a GPA of 3.0 or above.

To apply, head over to the BRIDGE and after submitting your resume you will be directed to the position posting on the company’s website where you will be able to complete the application. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 30th.
