Summer Internships with Shepherd Poverty Program

We first heard about the Shepard Internship Program during RA Training during our info session. The student that participated spoke very highly of her experience so we were excited to learn from the Office of Civic Engagement that there will be some information sessions on campus for the program.

The Shepherd Internship Program is a competitive 8-week internship program that places rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with non-profit and government funded agencies in a variety of human service sectors throughout the United States. If selected you will live with other college students in urban or rural areas while interning in public service agencies.  You’ll also attend an opening orientation with over 100 students from 24 different schools and present your experiences at a closing conference following the internship. The program offers not just practical work experience and networking opportunities, but the chance to make a real difference for people in need.

The Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty integrates rigorous academic study and focused direct service to disadvantaged communities and individuals, enriching the education of undergraduate students in all majors and career paths. The intent of this program is to prepare students for lives aimed at diminishing poverty and enhancing human capability through professional and civic efforts. Upon completion of the internship, you will have the option of completing a poverty concentration as part of a Social Justice minor here at Bucknell.

Internships are offered in: Community Building, Economic Development, Education,  Healthcare, Homelessness, Housing Access, Hunger & Nutrition, Legal Advocacy, and Youth Outreach. Locations include Phillips County, Arkansas; Navajo Reservation, Arizona; Atlanta, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; Boston, Massachusetts; Camden, New Jersey; New York City; Greensboro, North Carolina; Cleveland, Ohio; Chester, Pennsylvania; Austin, Texas; Lexington and Richmond, Virginia; Washington, DC; Charleston and Fayetteville, West Virginia.
