Sophie Hattery ’16

Sophie’s peer picks this week include:

–  American Enterprise Institute

Brant Publications

For my first peer pick, I wanted to target those of you who want to approach economics in a different manner during your summer internship – particularly in the D.C. area. If you chose to apply to the American Enterprise Institute, you could find yourself working alongside Derek Scissors, a Resident Scholar who focuses on Asian economic issues. He centralizes on the Chinese and Indian economies and United States economic relations with Asian countries. The Asian Economies intern will be responsible for researching and media monitoring of Chinese outward investment, fact-checking, and providing support for ongoing projects. The criteria necessary to apply involve having a strong interest in Asian economics, the ability to conduct independent research, and strong analytic skills. Moreover, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to easily and quickly read Mandarin Chinese are highly valued. If this all sounds riveting to you, do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, April 7th! Do not forget to check out the American Enterprise Institute’s other offerings in an array of other subject matters, which are also due the same day!

As for my second peer pick, I chose an internship with Brant Publications. Interns will observe and assist the Online Editors in maintaining the Interview site, www.interviewmagazine.com.  Interns will also gain invaluable training and experience with all aspects of running a website and the ever-evolving world of online media by learning how to transcribe interviews and building effective slideshows.  They are also encouraged to pitch and research story ideas and will be exposed to blogging. If you are hesitant to take on all of these responsibilities, do not fear! There is a strong mentorship component to the internship, with constant feedback provided on writing and pitches in a workshop setting. There is a preference for humanities majors who have an interest in fashion, art, film, music, and culture as well as experience with transcribing interviews, Photoshop, InDesign, and HTML. Do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, April 7th as well!
