Studying Abroad and Your Internship Search

If you are finishing up your Fall semester and getting read to head out to another country come Spring, Sophie ’16 has some advice for you and how to keep your internship search going from anywhere in the world.

When you’re abroad, the last thing you want to think about is addressing any sort of responsibility that ties you to the world of adulthood. The reality check looms over your head, as you ruminate over the splendor of Alhambra, the exhilaration that comes with exploring foreign territory, and how you can readily relate to how Proust experienced involuntary memory upon tasting a madeleine: you must find an internship that will help you sort what interests you and in turn lead to a future career. Perhaps, you will be fortunate enough to find a job that will base you in the very country with which you have fallen in love.

Basically, what I am getting at is that you should not become so immersed in your journey abroad to the point that you forsake your duty as a college junior or senior. Having your best interests in mind, I would highly suggest being proactive and stopping by the CDC to ensure that you know how to properly wield all your career developing tools while you do not have access to (most likely) a phone, strong Internet access, and communication with staff members and peers. They will ensure that you know how to use the Bridge that offers unique opportunities available in the fall when employers visit Bucknell for on-campus recruiting! You will become well versed in résumé and cover letter writing, how to interview, and how to network. Remember that many companies have become very tech-savvy over the years and can potentially offer Skype interviews. A mock interview in our office could not hurt in preparing you for one of them! You won’t be missing out, even if you are potentially in a different time zone. One final hint, be very aware of due-dates for applications, and be ready to convey to your potential employer that you are overseas!

In short, if these following words seem as foreign to you as your location abroad, then you should schedule an appointment or visit us during “Quick Questions” from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM everyday!
