As we all prepare to embark on the journey back home, we often forgo all responsibility in the interest of relaxing, along with spending time with our loved ones and friends. While I wholly support and find myself conforming to this holiday break stereotype, I would highly advise you all to actively check the BRIDGE in your spare time! Many due dates are approaching, and you would not want to miss out on an internship opportunity!

For this week, I chose to highlight Organizing for Action HQ’s internship. Organizing for Action’s program is based in either Chicago, IL or Washington, D.C. While this internship targets those who support Obama, the experience that you will receive in working for a grassroots movement built by millions of Americans will prove invaluable. Organizing for Action seeks to create jobs, bolster the middle class, combat climate change, prevent gun violence, protect women’s rights, educate people about Obamacare, and ensure marriage equality. Perhaps your views will sway upon working here and gaining insight into political views not similar to those of your own. I know that I personally became more fiscally conservative upon working with a Republican congressman from Louisiana my junior year of high school, so I can attest to the importance of being exposed to diverse opinions.

Imagine having the unique opportunity to work closely with staff in advancing the President’s agenda in either major city for the Spring or Summer of 2014 for 14-weeks! You can even choose between the following departmental placements available such as Grassroots Organizing, Training, Issue Campaigns, Digital, Press and Finance. If this internship sounds like your cup of tea, do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, December 2nd!

My second peer pick is an internship for the Committee on Education and the Workforce in Washington D.C. This internship would take place during the spring of 2014 and is seeking general undergraduate interns, graduate interns and fellows for education (K-12), and graduate interns and fellows for labor. Interns perform a variety of tasks that support the staff in our legislative and media work. Legislative tasks may include legislative research, assembling information, assisting staff in hearing and markup preparation and execution, and attending other hearings, markups, briefings and meetings for the purpose of taking notes. Media tasks may include helping organize and staff committee press conferences and assisting with the production of daily news clips relating to Committee issues. Interns also perform administrative duties, such as answering phones, and sorting and distributing mail. I cannot stress enough the worthwhile experience you will get out of working in D.C., especially on the Hill. They provide you with first-hand, interactive activities on a daily basis and will treat you as a fellow staff member. If this internship sounds like the ideal way to spend your spring, do not forget to apply on the BRIDGE by Monday, December 2nd as well!
