Sophie’s Picks:
1.
Montour County DA’s Office for the Victim Services Program
2. Wall Street Journal

With Fall Break coming along, the last thing on your mind is work. Although it is hard to accept, those few days are the prime time to apply to internships when you do not have to juggle school and other commitments! This week, I decided to highlight very hands on internships. My personal quip is that an internship should always be setting you up to the point where you could take on a future job at wherever you are working – the only difference between the job and internship being that there is more room to make mistakes at the beginning and you get to test run if you like the “job” itself!

My first Peer Pick is an internship at Montour County DA’s Office for the Victim Services Program. Located in Danville, Pennsylvania, this first-level entry position is perfect for easing a pre-law student into a hands-on experience in legal service. While this position requires close supervision by a coordinator, you will have the opportunity to have a significant degree of contact with victims and witnesses in terms of providing basic services. During your time at the DA’s Office, you will perform administrative functions such as making and receiving phone calls, preparing and sending notifications to the victims, witnesses, and other criminal justice professionals, help your coordinator to provide advocacy on behalf of the victims and witnesses, filing claims for restitution, help prepare grant requests, and attend court hearings to represent the victim’s interest.

If this interactive internship sounds right for you, make sure that you have a general knowledge of the criminal justice system (beyond the scope of what you have seen in Law and Order), have some knowledge of human services, have the ability to communicate well orally and in writing, and anticipate graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field. Also, since the work is very involved with the victims, one year of administrative work in an office environment, preferably in a criminal justice, human service or related field, with some demonstrated performance in providing direct service to individual clients is also required. The application is due on Thursday, October 31st at 11:59 PM!

Montour County DA’s Office for the Victim Services Program – Deadline October 31st

My second Peer Pick would be an internship at the Wall Street Journal, for those who are specializing in Communications/Media, Advertising, Marketing/PR, and Publishing/Print Media. While the main office is in New York, there are opportunities to work in Europe and Asia if one demonstrates appropriate language proficiency in addition to his or her interest in journalism. The Wall Street Journal’s U.S.-based internships are aimed at undergraduates, recent graduates or graduate students who intend a career in journalism. This paid internship is for 10 weeks, wherein you are paid $700 per week.

Interns work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of news relevant to their beat.  Interns write market commentary and forward-looking features, analyze market data and generally hone their journalistic skills. Interns are expected to generate their own story ideas appropriate for the section to which they are assigned, and follow the stories through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor. Interns should be self-starters who understand the needs of the paper’s growing readership on various real-time, online and print platforms.  Dedication to high journalism standards, proof of excellent writing skills and dogged reporting are absolute musts.  Candidates should have prior reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in news as well as the ability to work independently and under deadline pressure. Speaking of deadlines, do not forget to apply on Friday, November 1st!
