Sophie’s Picks:
1. Volunteers Around the World

2. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Hope that all of you had a good experience at the Employer Expo last week! If you did not have the chance to walk around due to classes and other commitments, do not worry. There are ample opportunities available still on the Bridge to which you can apply!

This week, I chose a paid internship at Volunteers Around the World. This non-governmental organization seeks to better the standard of living for people living in poverty by means of providing access to medical treatment, medication, nutritional security, clean water, and health education. The internship is located in scenic Lewisburg, Pennsylvania – so if you cannot get enough of this place during the school year, you should definitely check this out!

The goal that VAW has set forth for their prospective intern is to recruit and prepare a team of student volunteers during the 2013-2014 school years. The intern, or the team leader, will also be in charge of establishing a board of student directors for the club, creating a liaison with a faculty mentor on campus and making a club, attending phone meetings with staff, and help with fundraising. Moreover, there will be traveling involved, namely to Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, or Panama the summer of 2014 wherein the team will partake in the operation of mobile medical clinics in poorer communities. The intern will get hands-on experience with intaking patients, taking vitals, shadowing the doctors, performing triage, distributing medications, and finally, teaching classes on hygiene, nutrition, and first aid. If you are interested in applying, be sure to do so by Monday, October 7th!

Volunteers Around the World Internship – Deadline Monday, October 7th

My second Peer Pick is targeted towards chemical and civil engineers. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission boasts being one of the best places to work in the Federal Government. This reputation is credited by the work environment rich in opportunity, diversity, leadership training, teamwork, and work life balance. If leading our nation into the future of nuclear safety is what interests you, this paid internship will be a great stepping stone into a challenging career with the USNRC. Become familiar with nuclear materials in medicine, industry, and research.  If you are within the areas of Rockville, MD, Region I- King of Prussia, PA, Region II- Atlanta, GA, Region III- Lisle, IL and Region IV- Arlington, TX, then apply by Monday, October 21st! Just ensure that you fall under the given requirements: you are a proven U.S. citizen, are ready to have a background investigation completed and be drug tested, and finally must have a minimum GPA of 2.85.
