On February 20th, Lauren Hughes ’02 took over @BisonINCareers and showed us what life is like as the Director of Development at Breastcancer.org.
If you missed it you can read all about her day here.
Lauren has worked in HR, at the Philadelphia Museum for membership services, and at NPR affiliate WHYY before starting a new work adventure in September with Breastcancer.org. Read through her impressive bio and then make sure you follow, interact, and ask questions directly with Lauren on @BisonINCareers on February 20th and get tips on working in the nonprofit sector (or email us your questions [careerevents@bucknell.edu] and we can ask on your behalf).
Lauren’s full bio:
Lauren graduated magna cum laude from Bucknell in 2002 and majored in English and Intellectual History. Her first job out of school was in human resources for SMG, a facility management company now based in Conshohocken, PA, with a focus on recruiting and employee relations. While finding the work fascinating, after three years Lauren felt the call of the nonprofit sector and made the jump in early 2006 and took a position at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Membership & Visitor Services. After several years running around the museum with a walki-talki troubleshooting guest and member relations, Lauren took the position of Community Relations Coordinator with WHYY, the Philadelphia region’s PBS and NPR affiliate. Now, life was all Sesame Street and Fresh Air with Terry Gross – and fundraising, member/donor engagement, donor database management, and event management. In working at WHYY, Lauren joined another Bucknellian on staff, reporter Lizz Fiedler ’01 (@EAFiedler).
Looking for that next step in her career, Lauren joined Breastcancer.org in September 2012 as Director of Development. In this role, Lauren is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and overall management of key philanthropic fundraising programs, including event activities, annual giving, and grants. Lauren works closely with another Bucknell alum, Cindy Pelton ’82, who is the Director of Special Gifts. Breastcancer.org is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the most reliable, complete, and up-to-date information about breast cancer. It is the world’s most utilized online resource for medical and personal expert information on breast health and breast cancer — reaching 27 million people globally over the past 10 years. Breastcancer.org was founded in 2000 by Dr. Marisa Weiss, a breast cancer oncologist with more than 20 years of active practice in the Philadelphia region.
“I am thrilled to be part of such a dynamic, energized, and gifted team, committed to providing such a necessary and valuable resource to the breast cancer community and to individuals concerned about their breast health. It’s an honor and a privilege to come to work each day and know that our work makes a difference in the lives of so many.”
In addition to her day job, for the past several years, Lauren has been serving as the President of the Bucknell Club of Philadelphia, but is (finally!) relinquishing that role at the end of March to Brendan Putnam ’03.
A devoted urbanite, Lauren lives in Center City Philadelphia, loves exploring the Philly restaurant scene, and is trying to build a running habit, completing her first marathon in November of 2011. Currently crossing her fingers that she wins a lottery spot in the 2013 Broad Street Run.
