If You’re Doing An Externship…

…go you!

But seriously if you are going to be doing an Externship over Winter Break here are a few tips:

  1. Make sure you have contacted your sponsor to set up your externship details; like date and time, initial meeting location, directions, parking recommendations, appropriate attire. I bold this for a reason, when in doubt over dress! Suits and business attire always go over well, even in places that may have a more relaxed dress code; jeans, sweatpants, yoga pants not so much.
  2. Once all the details are set up – arrive 10 minutes early and HAVE FUN! Take it all in – the good, the bad, the ugly or just the pure awesome. Have a firm handshake will all those you meet, try to remember names, and always ALWAYS thank them for their time!
  3. When it’s all said and done I would suggest writing a few notes about the experience. These will come in handy when writing your Thank You Notes, adding the experience to your resume,  as well as when building your network; jot down who you met, their title (if you know it), what you loved, what you didn’t love, what you learned and what you got out of it.
  4. After your externship you also need to make sure you evaluate the Externship Program and your Sponsor. This helps us help you better!
  5. And don’t forget to send those handwritten, personal Thank You Notes! This is where your notes can come in handy. You wouldn’t believe how far a small gesture like this can go…we’ve told you here and here.
  6. Add your externship to your resume – go back to those notes! Not sure how to talk about your experience? Then come into the CDC and we can help you. If you don’t want to wait until you are back on campus we ARE OPEN during winter break. Call (570-577-2839) or email (cdc@bucknell.edu)…even if it’s just to set up an appointment to come in when you get back!
  7. Lastly…get your Externship spotlighted! Email us (cdc@bucknell.edu) if you are interested in sharing your experience and we’ll be in touch with you with the details.

We hope you all have a great time over your Winter Break and especially at your Externship!
