Student Perspective: Using Twitter for Job Searching

Why use Twitter?

  • Twitter is described as the “next-generation forum of discussion”
  • Career coaches and counselors, personal branding specialists, and resume writers are available on Twitter to assistant you with job searching
    • Twitter is the “new ‘underground’ for jobs,” because it isn’t overflowing with other jobseekers yet
    • Twitter enables users to contact employers directly
    • Twitter creates a great network for jobseekers

Why businesses are using Twitter:

  • Businesses are becoming attuned Twitter, contorting it from a social outlet to a job candidate search tool
  • Companies are turning to Twitter because it is free
  • Twitter puts employers in touch with prime job candidates that few other web services provide
  • It is easier for businesses to build relationships and keep in contact with colleagues and prospective candidates

Tips on using Twitter and creating effective accounts:

  • Registering with Twitter is easy and free!
  • When creating a username, you should be smart, conservative, and unique
    • Some examples of options might be: firstlastname; first-lastname; professional nickname; targetjobtitlefirstname; targetjobtitle
    • Jobseekers are encouraged to point visitors to your online resume or other pages where they can learn more about you and your career aspirations
    • Craft a great biography that includes relevant keywords (as seen in your resume)
    • Use a professional photo of yourself
    • You should tweet about: your career; your industry; technology advancements that affect your career/industry; job/career/industry challenges you need assistance with
    • Hashtags are labels categorize blog posts and provide shortcuts for jobseekers to search for jobs or other hiring/career topics
      • First, you should decide on a variety of keywords that match your job target
        • Some common hashtags include: #jobsearch, #hiring, #tweetmyjobs, #resume, and #interview
  • Additional hashtags and information can be found at hashtags.org
  • Using hashtags, you can also search for advice on advancing your resume, interviewing skills, networking, and salary negotiation skills or stay in informed about certain job topics

Twitter Extended:

  • TweetBeep is a service where you set up searches for certain tweets and it automatically updates you via email when that specific word or phrase is tweeted on Twitter
  • NearbyTweets allows you to search Twitter for users near you or in whatever location you specify. This tool can help you locate recruiters in certain areas in which you are interested
  • TwitterJobSearch claims to be “the world’s first job search engine to harness the power of Twitter.” This tool collects job postings from Twitter and other social networking sites and allows you to search job listings most relevant to you. TwitterJobSearch sorts individual tweets by “tweeted on,” “job title,” and “country, tweet frequency, salary, skills, job type”
