Graduate School Advising Information

Professor Andrea Halpern is the University Graduate School Advising Coordinator. Please see the important information about Graduate School Advising that she has shared with campus via the Message Center:

Dear Students:

As University Graduate School Advising Coordinator, my job is to gather information about academic graduate school resources, to assemble expert advisors for departments and fellowships, and to serve as a reference person for general questions about graduate school. The Graduate Advising webpage has been newly updated for this year, with current departmental and fellowship advisors now listed.

Seniors should be making serious plans now about whether to apply for graduate school, and some fellowship application deadlines are approaching. Juniors and sophomores are also invited to begin planning early for graduate school, especially if you have plans to study abroad in the near future.

Here are some ways to use the Graduate Advising website. You can look up the departmental graduate advisor most closely matching your interests, and contact him or her by phone or email. It is also well worth considering applying for some of the national study and travel fellowships listed. They provide a substantial stipend for your further education, and considerable prestige attaches to winning or even making it on to later stages of the competitions. Please review the fellowship information (click on each fellowship to get to its site) and then contact the fellowship advisor listed with the fellowships for which we have on-campus advisors. You may also browse links to numerous miscellaneous fellowships as well.

Engineering students will find some information of special relevance under the Engineering Advising link.

Students interested in the health professions, law or MBA programs should consult the Career Development Center webpage (there is a link from the Graduate Advising webpage) for the names of the appropriate advisors. The CDC also has information about GRE’s, with a link to the Educational Testing Service.

If you do not find the information you need from the listed departmental or fellowship advisors, or have general inquiries, or just need help getting started, please contact me. My office hours are M 2:30 – 4, Th 11-12, or by appointment. Also, Sarah Bell of the CDC and I will be offering our semi-annual program on Graduate School Strategies on October 8, noon, in O’Leary 232.
