Bmail and the Internship/Job Search

There is an old (and overused) saying that goes “searching for a job is a job,” and as much as it’s a cliche it’s also pretty accurate.

We tell you here that each cover letter should be customized to the job and often times your resume too. We send Weekly Job Lists from Experience.com filled with great jobs and internships with varying deadlines. Then there are all those great other resources and listings like InterQueen, Intern Alert, YouTern not to mention LinkedIn and any other company research you may do (like on One Day, One Job).

All this adds up to a lot! And I’m not even including classes, homework, practice or any other extracurricular activities. So I understand why it’s easy to not think about a job or an internship…it’s hard work and you are already going to school. But luckily Google – I mean Bmail – has some great tools to help you get organized and make the process a little easier.

The Idealist Blog recently covered 4 Google Apps that you can use to help keep the application process simple – I took their 4 and added a few:

  • Docs – to save copies of each cover letter you write and job descriptions
  • Spreadsheets – to track everything: when you applied, where you found the job listing, job category, call back, etc. They have a great example of how to set on up and you can feel free to copy it. You can also use this to keep track of business cards or conversations you may have at the Employer Expo (9/20) or the various other career fairs we have throughout the year.
  • Google Reader – to follow the Career Insider of course! and other great blogs that offer great advice, job and internship opportunities and much more.
  • Google Alerts – to set up keyword alerts on things like “advertising jobs.” You can determine how often you want the alert and it can go straight into your Google Reader (see above). It may require some finesse getting the best results but it’s worth trying out.
  • Calendar – to keep track of phone interviews, deadlines, mock interviews you set up with the CDC and more!
  • Gmail or Bmail (in our case) – to apply for the jobs or internships, use the features to track applications, follow up or set up automated responses in case you get an email while you are busy with exams, traveling for a team or away on break

Remember – nothing is going to make finding a job or an internship really easy; the reality is is that they take work to find but these tools can help you manage the process, and in turn your stress levels.
