My Experience:
During my externship, I was able to see many different aspects of the eye care industry. I was able to observe three different types of eye surgery, as well as many regular patient visits. I was also able to talk to two optometry school students and ask them questions about their experiences and plans for the future.
How did this externship help me make decisions about my future career?
Observing all of the different aspects of eye care and seeing the busy yet friendly atmosphere in the office definitely made me want to pursue a career in the field of eye care. It was definitely an environment in which I could see myself in the future.
What questions did I ask my sponsor?
I asked Dr. Shovlin and his students many questions about their experiences at optometry school, the procedures I observed, and how their career choice had impacted their personal lives.
Other comments:
I’m very glad I utilized the externship program and I would definitely recommend it to other students!
