Firsts and Lasts

It’s your last day of classes at Bucknell. Ever. Can you believe it? We can’t either! But don’t despair…there is some good news on this day of lasts. #1 is that you have access to career services for a lifetime (and free!) so if you still need some help, now or later in life, Bucknell will be there for you. Make sure you connect with the Linked Bucknell Alumni Group and bookmark the ACS (Alumni Career Services) website. Besides being available for counseling, ACS also offers really great programs, networking opportunities, and webinars. #2 We are still here for you […]

Tip from Forbes: Facebook and Job Search

I wanted to share this great tip I saw in a recent Forbes article on how to build a positive social media profile and avoid being rejected by a potential employer: Always follow the old saying about not posting anything that would make you embarrassed if it were published on the front page of a newspaper. Don’t use Facebook as a forum to vent on everything you hate about life, your job, someone else, or a company – talk to a friend in person if you feel the need to vent. For more tips, here is a link to the […]

“Go West, Young Man”

There may be a debate about who actually said this famous line but there is no debate in its call to action, “go west!” Recently the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) released a survey that indicates that the “Midwest Leads in Hiring Projection Increase.” The good news is: hiring plans are increasing! According to the survey, Responses indicate that the increase in college hiring will be highest in the Midwest, where employers expect to hire 18.5 percent more college graduates in 2012 than they did in 2011. Employers in the West also anticipate a double-digit increase—11.5 percent. Why […]

Behavioral Interviews

We discussed Case Interviews, which is all well and good but not everyone will be subjected to a case interview so now I’d like to turn our attention to Behavioral Interviews. Behavioral Interviews, or Behavioral-Based Interviews (BBI), is a technique used by employers to learn about your past behavior in particular situations to help determine how you would perform on the job and fit into the organization. “Enthusiasts believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior…more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior […]

Did you see the new Transcript Request process?

We came across this in the Message Center (that place is full of information!) and wanted to make sure we pointed it out here as many students find themselves needing to request transcripts for career-related reasons, especially for graduate schools (that’s leading to a career so I’m counting it). Here was the message: Effective 02/06/12, the website utilized for transcript requests will change. All online orders for transcripts should be completed at www.iwantmytranscript.com. Online transcript requests at this site require the use of a debit/credit card, and requests will NOT be processed until payment has been received. Information on transcript […]

What IS a Case Interview?

On-Campus Recruiting is starting back up and I thought now would be a good time to talk about Case Interviews. You may have heard this term thrown around but do you really know what a case interview is? If you are hoping to go into the management, consulting or the investment banking area then you definitely NEED TO KNOW because a case interview will almost definitely be a part of your interview process. In a case interview the job applicant is given a question, situation, problem or challenge and asked to solve it. The case problem  or challenge is often […]

Hollywood is lying to you

It should come as no surprise to you that Hollywood’s portrayal of “real life” is less than real. No that’s being too nice, it’s a flat out farce. Reality TV is anything but reality and shows like Gossip Girl makes it seem like once you get into one Ivy you can go to any of them and internships are easy to walk away from, especially for a frenemy. If anyone here thought these disillusions were based on anything resembling real life then I’m sorry to have to burst your bubble. Why, you may be asking, is this relevant to a […]

Internship & Job Fair

One week from today classes start up again. Now maybe that isn’t the best opening line I could use but it’s the truth.  I start there because I’m going to remind you about the on-campus Internship & Job Fair that we’ll be hosting on Jan. 31st. That may seem like a long time away but you know, as well as I do, that the minute classes start time flies. So I’m telling you now. Classes are starting and there’s a great fair coming up. And you don’t have to wait to be back in the bubble to start prepping for […]

Job Search Engine Tips and Suggestions from Indeed.com

We came across this article from our Alumni Career Services office and wanted to share it as we found it was full of some great information. Alison Doyle, from About.com, got to spend some time time talking with Indeed.com’s co-founder and CEO, Paul Forster, about online job searching and how to get the best results when using a job search engine. Paul suggests that, “Job seekers narrow their search as much as possible in order to find jobs that fit their experience, skills, and desired location.” He goes on to say that it makes sense to “Focus on finding exactly […]

Welcome Back! We hope you had a great Thanksgiving and tried out some of our Networking tips during the break.  If you are still feeling shy we’ve got some helpful tips that may get you over that last bump. First we’d like to start out with a great quote by Betty Bender: Anything I’ve ever done that ultimately was worthwhile…initially scared me to death This is all well and good, but who the heck is Betty Bender?! She’s a motivational speaker and consultant and … we just really liked this quote. Alright so awhile back we posted a similar article […]

30-seconds To Getting To Know Yourself

As part of our “Networking Month” we’ve highlighted that, before you start networking and setting up informational interviews, it is important to know yourself. I know we’ve written about Elevator Pitches before but we’d like to just take this time to reiterate and add on. So you may still be wondering what is an “elevator pitch”, why do I need one, and how do I get one? The reason to develop a short “elevator pitch” or “commercial” about yourself is to be able to quickly and simply explain who you are, what you could do for an employer and/or what […]

Networking takes work!

It ain’t easy and no one said it was going to be but you are in luck – because we have resources to help you! This post is part of what I deemed November Networking Month at the end of the post when I still had more to say! So I hope you enjoy this first installment and look for more in the following weeks. So let’s start with the basics: What is Networking? The term gets used so much and I often wonder if students really know what it means so let’s start with a definition, “Networking is the […]
