Thanks for your email, I’m on Spring Break!

With a blizzard brewing from  Chicago down to Baltimore (and Philly in between) it’s hard to feel like Spring is in the air but judging by how packed the library is it’s easy to see that midterms are here and with that we know Spring Break is just around the corner. And I for one say enjoy it while you have it! But it is important to remember the the “real world” does not have such luxuries and employers may contact you over the week you are away.  So while your gearing up for your well-deserved break you should think […]

Offer Acceptance Protocol

Accepting Offers: Once you accept an internship or full time position verbally or in writing, you MUST honor this commitment. Continuing to interview after accepting an offer, or reneging on an accepted offer, is highly unethical and unprofessional in all employment industries. If you encounter a problem after accepting an offer, the circumstances should be discussed with a career counselor/advisor. You should confirm an accepted offer in writing and request that organizations confirm their offers in writing also. For assistance in navigating employment offers, please come to the career center.

Email Vacation and Signatures Settings

In the stress of finals and the excitement of heading home for a month, it is easy to forget minor details – like setting up a vacation response. If you are in the middle of a job or internship search we recommend setting up your vacation settings in Bmail. It may help if a potential employer happens to send you an email during this time to make sure they are aware that you are currently on break. It doesn’t have to be long or fancy. Something easy and quick. Something to let them know that you may not be checking […]

Small Town Thinking

I am not talking about ignorance here, I am talking about the mindset you get when you limit your thoughts to a distance or a radius. Let me explain: I had to run up to the library the other day and as I was preparing to leave I found myself wondering if there was anything else that I needed to drop off “up there” – to be efficient? to be lazy? – I’m not sure. Then I realized as I was walking up there that, for some reason, I was thinking of this trip as a trek; as if walking to the […]

Pass the potatoes and your card please…

Take time over Thanksgiving Break to network with those around the dinner table – you’d be surprised to find out who works where and does what, and even better, who that person may know and be able to refer you to as well. Let friends and family know you are looking for a job or an internship and you may find out that your very own connections may be very helpful to you in your search! Some other lessons we can learn from Thanksgiving as adapted from Claire Klieger of Penn Career Services Blog Many people have a strategy for […]

Decoding Dress Codes

Figuring out what to wear on a daily basis can be challenging. It gets even more difficult when you are dressing for an interview, career fair, internship, first day of work…the list goes on! We hear a lot of you ask about what you should wear (which is great- it shows you’re conscious of having to look professional) but unfortunately there is no single answer to this question. A lot of what to wear is industry based or depends on the situation. For instance for an interview with GE I would wear a suit, no question. But if I were […]

How to sign up for an event on the BRIDGE

We’ve been ending a lot of our posts with “sign up on the BRIDGE,” lately and I just wanted to take a minute to make sure everyone knows how to do it. It may seem difficult at first but once you get the hang of it signing up for an event on the BRIDGE is super easy…especially since if you are signed in to myBucknell you can access the BRIDGE without signing in again. OK so let’s say just got an email about our “Are You LinkedIn?” workshop on October 18th…here’s how you sign up: Sign into the BRIDGE Mouse […]

Help, I Have To Submit A Writing Sample!?

Even though most applications require a cover letter and resume there are a few industries and areas that will also ask that you submit a writing sample. During the interview your spoken communication skills are assessed, but since some positions require various forms of written communication, the company may also want evidence of how well you express yourself in written form – in comes the writing sample. While any employer whose position requires writing skills may want samples, writing samples are more common in publishing, public relations, advertising, media, research, and law. If you are a typical college student, your […]

Always wear pants, know where you are, tell all your friends, and other Skype Interviewing Tips

Re-sharing some tips I learned from the Intern Queen when she came to campus (way back when) regarding interviewing and the increasingly popular Skype interview. Here is my take on her tips: Always Wear Pants: This is a good lesson for life in general but we’ll just stick to the reasons why in regards to interviewing. You may think because you are sitting down in front of desk you won’t be able to see your legs but this is not a guarantee so let’s just err on the side of caution and put some pants on. Be Aware Your Surroundings: […]

Making The Most Of Career Fairs (like the Expo on 9/20!)

Career Fairs, like Employer Expo (on 9/20) and other networking events provide an opportunity for you to explore careers, gather information from prospective employers, and develop contacts to use in the course of your job  or internship search. Companies attend these events for a variety of reasons: to increase awareness about their organization or the opportunities they offer; to identify potential candidates for future hiring needs; or to fill specific positions that may currently be available.  The Bucknell alumni and parents who attend CDC networking events are enthusiastic about sharing information regarding their career paths, as well as assisting students […]

Don’t Make 1 of These “Top 8 Internship Blunders”

We know many of you are off to great internships this summer (remember to let us know what you are up to!) and wanted to share this great article from US News & World Report “On Careers” Section. We agree with the author that, “if you make the most of your internship by going above and beyond your tasks, you will be infinitely better-equipped with a deeper resume, recommendations, and potential opportunities in the future.” But be wary of these eight common ways interns blow opportunities, like “Failing to ask questions or ask for more work.” Read the full article […]

Pinterest and Job Searching

NACE (our our national professional association) recently published a great article on “Using Pinterest as a Job-Search and Branding Tool.” Since we are on Pinterest we love the idea of using it, in general, and for your job search. Just because we think this is a fun idea does not mean you need to do it or it is essential for your job search but we wanted to share the idea with you in case you’d like to explore it. Here is a quick excerpt: “The arts, graphic design, marketing, and other heavily visual majors will probably find using Pinterest […]
