Um…Like…You Should Seriously Hire Me

When I was in graduate school I had to do a mock interview in front of my entire class. Then the class, as well as my Professor (who had 7 Masters and 2 Ph.D’s –no joke!) critiqued me. As horrifying as this sounds, it was every bit! But it was also amazingly helpful. I think I owe all the jobs I’ve gotten due to that class. While I was doing some research on Mock Interview tips I came across this great post on SUNY Cortland’s Career Services blog and had to share it. On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) starts February 7th, get […]

Negotiation Strategies with Professor Johnson-Cramer

While negotiating is an art, it is the most taken for granted, and least understood, of all arts, despite the fact that in one form or another, the practice of negotiating is an integral part of our daily lives. – Gordon Wade Rule, The Art of Negotiation Unsure of how much or when you should negotiate a job or internship offer?  Michael Johnson-Cramer, Associate Professor and co-director of the School of Management, who teaches about the process of negotiation, will discuss this art and answer your questions. On-Campus Recruiting Starts February 7th

Did you know that several employers come to campus to recruit Bucknellians to work at their companies? If the thought of this makes your blood pressure rise…don’t worry! Here are 5 easy steps to help you stand out and conquer the on-campus recruiting (OCR) process. 1) Accentuate the Positive. Rather than getting stuck on the ways you think you aren’t competitive, focus on what strengths (and you all have them) you bring to the position. The easiest way to do this is to first understand what skills an employer is looking for so… 2) Know the industry. Following what’s going […]

A Rational Oddball?

I know it seems like an obvious contradiction but let me explain; I’ve seen a lot of articles recently from various sources but namely from Glassdoor.com’s blog, and it always makes me thankful that I was never faced with questions like these. It also has me wondering…why do they try to stump you with such odd questions. And if you are wondering the same thing then I’m glad you’re reading this because it turns out there are good reasons… According to an article in eWeek discussing this very topic, “these unconventional queries seem designed to not only force job applicants […]

Job Search – Everyone has a Story to Tell

By:  CareerAlley “Your tale, sir, would cure deafness.” – William Shakespeare So what is the most difficult environment you’ve ever worked in? Everyone has their horror stories. Some don’t seem as bad when you compare them to someone else’s sob story. One of mine (and I do have many) was early in my career when I was working for a company that was very competitive and believed in a competitive work environment (ironically, this company is no longer around). Every year, managers had to fire the bottom 25% of their staff (whether they were good or not) and replace them […]

3 Tips To Welcome You Back To Campus

Welcome back, after what was hopefully a relaxing and enjoyable winter break! The campus just wasn’t the same without you here. I could find parking but missed the New York Times; I could find a treadmill but missed the fitness classes; I could find a table at the Bison but missed fighting the crowd…err OK not really on that one but in short…we missed all of you! And now classes begin tomorrow and, if you haven’t started already, now is a good time to get moving on your internship or job search. Here’s three tips to get you started: Get […]

Some Ideas When You Have No Idea About What To Do For Work

I came across this great blog post on Career Hub…a source I regularly go to for ideas on our own blog. The posts I find here are always creative and filled with great information. Now this post is aimed at the out of college job seeker but much of what is suggested can be for both the new job or internship seeker and the “seasoned” job seeker. The only thing I will add to the list below is to make sure you take advantage of the Career Development Center here on campus. A lot of the suggestions and exercises offered […]

Student Persepctive: The Early Bird Gets the Worm

Another great installment of advice from Brittany Waser ’12. As winter break is rapidly approaching (and I may have been counting down since returning from Thanksgiving break), most likely the last thing on your mind after finishing exams is resuming your summer internship or job search. While it may seem ridiculous to be thinking of where you will be in June amidst the freezing cold weather of winter, especially for the fast paced world of a college student who may not know what they are eating for dinner let alone what they will be doing in six months, it pays […]

December Grads: 5 Misconceptions Entry-Level Job Seekers Make

I came across this great, short and sweet article from Heather R. Huhman’s blog and thought I’d share her quick tips. For those December grads these 5 points are really good to keep in mind as you find yourself in the “real world” now, but these aren’t only good for December grads so seniors listen up! I remember when I was an entry-level job seeker…seems like only yesterday! In the early days, I definitely made all of the following misconceptions (and more): 1. Your cover letter and resume are about you. Nope. In fact, you should use the word “I” […]
