Are Your Listening Skills Killing Your Chances Of Landing A Job?

With On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) in full swing we thought this post from Glassdoor.com Blog by Debra Wheatman was very pertinent. Enjoy! Good Luck! Schedule a Mock Interview! Come to Interview Tips (every Monday at 5pm)! In this article Debra explains, “It is normal and expected that you will be slightly nervous. The art of listening should not be diminished! Oftentimes, people tend to talk more when they are nervous. During an interview this can work against you.” She goes on to explain the other problem with failing to listen, “you may miss some important clues or red flags related to […]

Hitting with a spoon? Deal Breaker. And other Interview Do’s & Don’ts you can learn from toddlers

A fun article in honor of the first day of OCR You all should know by now that I LOVE NPR! Yup. I say it loud and I say it proud: I love NPR! I love it even more when I can use it for work (like we did when discussing Elevator Pitches). Well, courtesy of NPR comes yet another post from me, this time about preschoolers and interviewing. It really made me laugh. Then it made me feel bad for these little tykes. My preschool days were carefree bliss of making play dough (and of course taste testing it), […]

Bmail and the Internship/Job Search

There is an old (and overused) saying that goes “searching for a job is a job,” and as much as it’s a cliche it’s also pretty accurate. We tell you here that each cover letter should be customized to the job and often times your resume too. We send Weekly Job Lists from Experience.com filled with great jobs and internships with varying deadlines. Then there are all those great other resources and listings like InterQueen, Intern Alert, YouTern not to mention LinkedIn and any other company research you may do (like on One Day, One Job). All this adds up […]

Why YOU should take advantage of on-campus fairs (like the EXPO!)

From the NACE May 26, 2010 Spotlight Advising Students on Career Fair Participation Since their inception, career fairs have been an event designed to help students interact with employers, and many students used the opportunity to get their resumes into the hands of recruiters. How should students approach the career fair if this trend continues? What is their purpose for attending? Mike Mrozowski, chief of the recruitment and development branch of the Federal Energy […]

Infograph: What to wear and not to wear for an Interview (or career fair)

I was watching Millionaire Matchmaker (don’t judge) and she was “evaluating” this one poor girl and she had her take off her pantyhose right in front of her and said, “Don’t ever wear pantyhose, ever.” And it made me realize why so many people are confused on what to wear for interviewing and/or career fairs. On the one hand pantyhose are not in style but on the other hand they are professional. So I realize the mixed messaging you are getting out there for what’s appropriate and there has never been a greater mystery for college students than trying to […]

20 Essential TEDTalks for New Grads

If you haven’t heard of TED then you should come out from under that rock you’ve been living under. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design but has since become more broad and even bigger. TEDTalks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED with the world. Under the moniker “ideas worth spreading,” talks were released online, with the goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world’s most inspiring voice; this too has grown exponentially. TEDTalks has […]
