Um…Like…You Should Seriously Hire Me

When I was in graduate school I had to do a mock interview in front of my entire class. Then the class, as well as my Professor (who had 7 Masters and 2 Ph.D’s –no joke!) critiqued me. As horrifying as this sounds, it was every bit! But it was also amazingly helpful. I think I owe all the jobs I’ve gotten due to that class. While I was doing some research on Mock Interview tips I came across this great post on SUNY Cortland’s Career Services blog and had to share it. On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) starts February 7th, get […]

Did you know that several employers come to campus to recruit Bucknellians to work at their companies? If the thought of this makes your blood pressure rise…don’t worry! Here are 5 easy steps to help you stand out and conquer the on-campus recruiting (OCR) process. 1) Accentuate the Positive. Rather than getting stuck on the ways you think you aren’t competitive, focus on what strengths (and you all have them) you bring to the position. The easiest way to do this is to first understand what skills an employer is looking for so… 2) Know the industry. Following what’s going […]

Job Search – Everyone has a Story to Tell

By:  CareerAlley “Your tale, sir, would cure deafness.” – William Shakespeare So what is the most difficult environment you’ve ever worked in? Everyone has their horror stories. Some don’t seem as bad when you compare them to someone else’s sob story. One of mine (and I do have many) was early in my career when I was working for a company that was very competitive and believed in a competitive work environment (ironically, this company is no longer around). Every year, managers had to fire the bottom 25% of their staff (whether they were good or not) and replace them […]

December Grads: 5 Misconceptions Entry-Level Job Seekers Make

I came across this great, short and sweet article from Heather R. Huhman’s blog and thought I’d share her quick tips. For those December grads these 5 points are really good to keep in mind as you find yourself in the “real world” now, but these aren’t only good for December grads so seniors listen up! I remember when I was an entry-level job seeker…seems like only yesterday! In the early days, I definitely made all of the following misconceptions (and more): 1. Your cover letter and resume are about you. Nope. In fact, you should use the word “I” […]

Your Dream Job…Too Good To Be True?

We recently came across an article from JobsJournal.com about identifying job scams and thought we’d post it here since we often get questions about just what this article deals with –  “Spotting Internet Job Scams.” We hope you find it useful: By Surjit Sen Sharma While the percentage of simpleminded people, falling for internet job scams, seems to have remained the same this year as before, according to USA News Online, the numbers have definitely gone up.
