Starting off the Spring Semester with the Career Center

Welcome back! As the spring semester gets underway, the CCA is here and ready to work with you on your career goals, pursuits and plans. We also continue to work with the many employers who are attending career fairs, offering info sessions, and posting internships and entry-level job opportunities.

Here are three important steps for you to check off your to-do list so you’ll be ready for the many career events and opportunities that will happen throughout the semester:

  1. Get Active on Handshake
    • Activate your Account: To date, 75% of you have logged in and are active users on the platform since early fall, so we know you see the benefits the platform offers to Bucknell students in connecting with potential employers and the CCA! If you are part of the 25% who haven’t logged in yet, what are you waiting for?
    • Complete/update your profile: While 75% of you have logged in, only 37% of you have completed your profile. This helps us – and employers! – know what you are interested in; highlight your skills & experiences, career interests and job/geographic preferences.
    • Make time each week to review Handshake Events: Register to attend career events that are of interest to you. To stay informed about the status of events and programs; it’s important to RSVP and show up.
    • Review and apply to opportunities in a timely fashion: Be aware of deadlines – new internships and jobs are added each day!
  2. Update (or Write) Your Resume
    • Your resume represents YOU – on paper or electronically. Make sure it tells your story accurately and well. It should reflect your skills and experiences in the strongest way possible.
    • If you are just getting started on your resume, information and handouts are available 24/7 through the CCA Moodle pages.
    • Have your resume reviewed with a 15 minute appointment slot through Handshake to go over your resume with a career coach.
    • Be sure to proofread your documents. Typos and missed pieces of information may eliminate you from consideration – don’t risk missing out on your dream job or internship!
  3. Prepare for Career Fairs and Industry Meet & Greets
    • Our next {virtual} Job & Internship Fair is February 11thsee who’s participating!
    • Register to attend and sign up for individual sessions with employers anytime between 11am – 5pm that works with your schedule
    • Be sure your resume and Handshake profile are ready to go.
    • Practice your 30-second elevator pitch: make good eye contact, smile and be genuine.
    • Limit distractions when interacting with employers. Focus on the conversation and represent yourself and Bucknell well!
