The Adaptable Bucknellian: Leadership in a Rapidly Changing World

318panelThe world of work is constantly changing — now more than ever. How do we learn to adapt? How do we learn from our mistakes?   At this alumni panel, five incredibly accomplished alumni working in a variety of industries- fashion, law, architecture, consumer products — talk candidly about how they think about personal, organizational, and global change. The format will be a highly visual and engaging dialogue among panelists and with the audience. There will be the opportunity to visit informally with panelists after the program.

Panelists:

  • William “Bill” Biggar ’79 P’10, Vice President Sales – National Accounts, World Centric
    Bucknell Major:   Business Administration
    Drawing on his wide range of consumer experiences and business accomplishments, Mr.Biggar has gained experience in several corporate executive level positions in both multi-national and entrepreneurial companies. He launched several innovative businesses from concept creation to product development, sourcing through complete retail marketplace penetration. Most recently, Bill launched Nature Friendly Products in 2006 and merged it with a rival in 2012. The new company, World Centric is now a leading manufacturer of eco-friendly food service disposables, which has grown more than 100% since the merger. Bill, spent 21 years at Nestle USA and had several senior executive positions in Sales and Marketing at Nestle USA with complete P&L responsibility. Through his leadership and direction, he developed and led successfully many national brands from inception to over $1.5 billion in sales such as Stouffer’s, Lean Cuisine, Nestle Tollhouse, Ortega, Buitoni, Carnation, and Libby across all Retail and Food Service channels.
  • Robert “Bob” Carter ’79, Senior Vice President, Avalere
    Bucknell Major: Economics
    In this role, Bob leads Avalere’s Financial Services advisory practice group, which supports public and private equity healthcare.  Prior to joining Avalere, Robert sourced and diligenced investments for the private equity firm Welsh Carson Anderson and Stowe, and also served as Senior Vice President at Private Health Management, marketing specialized health services to hedge funds and private equity firms.   Robert has also led the development of several technology-enabled service businesses.   Most notable he was a senior executive a Silicon Valley start up that created the modern eBook industry.   The largest book retailer and the largest book publisher in the world invested in the Rocket eBook – the company was sold to Gemstar TV Guide.   Investors made a 10X return. Other early stage companies: a patent data company start up was sold to Bloomberg and a predictive analytics company was sold Bottomline Technologies (stock symbol: EPAY).  He was CEO of a start up that attempted and failed to monetize instant messaging using 3D avatars and virtual games.   He learned a lot from that one!
  • Ira Newman ’79 P’18, Attorney/Partner, Sanocki Newman & Turret, LLP
    Bucknell Major:  Economics
    Having practiced law in the state and federal courts of New York since 1983, Ira M. Newman has developed an expertise and outstanding reputation as a trial lawyer representing plaintiffs in medical malpractice actions, products liability, construction accidents, labor law, automobile accidents, and liability actions and lawsuits where damages are sought as a result of another’s negligence. In addition to trying cases in the counties comprising the greater metropolitan area, Mr. Newman tries matters in the federal courts including those located in other states such as California where in the midst of jury deliberations he achieved a large monetary settlement in a psychiatric malpractice case.  Mr. Newman is also admitted to practice law in the state of Florida. He has served on the Board of Directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
  • Gary Sheinbaum ’79, Chief Executive Officer, Tommy Hilfiger Americas
    Bucknell Major:  Political Science
    In this role, Gary leads the North American business, as well as oversees Tommy Hilfiger’s Latin America operations. Previously, Gary served as Chief Executive Officer of Tommy Hilfiger, North America beginning in 2009.  Since joining the company in 1995, Gary has worked in various capacities including President of Specialty Retail, President of Retail Development for the U.S. wholesale business and Group President, North America for outlet, specialty, retail and e-commerce. Prior to joining PVH, Gary was the President of J. Crew Retail for five years.  Pervious to J. Crew, he was the Managing Director of Polo Mansion on Madison Avenue.  Gary spent the first eight years of his career at Macy’s New York in a variety of store line and buying positions.
  • Hank White ’79, Founder and Principal, HMWhite
    Bucknell Major:  History
    As founder of HMWhite – his 23 year old Manhattan based urban design and landscape architectural firm – Hank has been responsible for numerous highly acclaimed and award-winning landscape design projects – diverse in type, environmental context and global locale. He has worked on 3 different continents employing sustainable design and place-making strategies while embracing and integrating relevant cultural and ethnic traditions. Through design intelligence and ecological engineering principles, his work strives to improve lifestyles for both public and private domains. Clients and communities have come to expect his distinctive landscape designs to be of consistent clarity of vision: site-specific, artful, compassionate, timeless, and ultimately enhancing the quality of the human experience.
