Here’s an quick list of what to think of and what to do with it. Student Perspective: Summer without an Internship?

By Katrina Hefele ’13 For those of you who don’t have internships this summer…don’t freak out, it’s not the end of the world! However, that doesn’t mean that you can just sit on your couch watching cartoons all day long; take charge of your life and be productive! Are you interested in becoming a vet? Volunteer at a local animal hospital. Maybe your interests lay in the arts? Then you could volunteer at a local museum. The most important thing to do with your summer is to learn, whether you are being paid or not.  Explore your interests;  say you […]

In case you didn’t already know, here’s more evidence that it’s a practice worth keeping up with. A new CareerBuilder survey found that 22 percent of hiring managers say they’re less likely to hire a candidate if they don’t get a thank-you after the interview. You kiss your mother with that mouth?

2011 version of the above saying: You apply for a job with that profile? I know you think I’m just being old and preachy and I “just don’t get it” but here is what I do know: if you have a Facebook profile you can almost guarantee that employers are going to search for it and, if they can find it, they are going to have a looksy at whatever you allow them to see. How do I know this? Well, for one, employers tell us! We recently had an employer reach out to us to express a bit of […]

Happy Spring Break!

I know you probably aren’t reading this but in case you are…I’ve been catching up on my Netflix Watch Instantly Queue and while I’m ashamed to admit it I am going to … I watch Greek. Yes, I know. Please remember this is a judgment free zone. So I used the surprise snow and then rain as a great excuse to veg-out on the couch and catch up on the show and sadly…I then thought of a blog post clearly demonstrating that inspiration can come from anywhere. So, anyway, remember that Greek episode (“The First Last”)  where everyone is on […]

Vacation Response

The sun is shinning and the temperature is forecasted to be in the 60s, which makes one thing clear: Spring is in the air; which also means so is Spring Break! And I for one say enjoy it while you have it! But it is important to remember the the “real world” does not have such luxuries and employers may contact you over the week you are away.  So while your gearing up for your well-deserved break you should think about activating your vacation mail/auto-responses and changing cell voice mail greetings. If you are not planning to check your email […]

Tips for Reaching Out to Alumni Effectively

While they can help you with contacts, advice, and even opportunities, they are putting themselves at risk to do so for someone they don’t know, so let them get to know you before asking for something. Consider asking for an informational interview. It is […]

Style: From Work to Networking

It takes less than 10 seconds to create a lasting first impression. Here’s how to wow them with style at your next networking event. By Donna Smith Right or wrong, shallow or not, we instinctively judge by appearances. Albert Mehrabian, author of Silent Messages (Wadsworth, 1971), claims appearance has a greater effect on people you meet for the first time than any other factor. He says 55 percent of an initial impression is based on how you look and only 7 percent on what you say. As the old adage goes, dress for the job you want – and the […]
