Build Your Own Internship

For the second time in two days I am dating myself by my comments but I’ll do it anyway. Have you ever heard of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books? Well they were great because throughout the book you could choose what the main character does and you could read the books over and over again, each time getting a new story. So they were creative and economical! In a similar vein the Wall Street Journal features an article today entitled “How to Create Your Own Summer Internship.” The article, subtitled “Creating Internships Out of Thin Air,” really caught my […]

Get Off Facebook and Get an Internship!

A lot of articles are now stating that employers are going to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media outlets to search for viable talent. So, does that mean that all you have to do is set a status message that you’re looking for a job and then add your resume to your profile? NO! Believe it or not employers are not going to be banging down your door if you’re a passive job hunter like that. Internships are still the way to go if you want to get noticed. Internships not only help you to gain relevant experience, but […]

Multilingual Boost

With the current open marketplace, having global experience and being bilingual is not only a skill but a requirement. Learning a new language can be a great asset – from endless job opportunities to attracting new customers. Betty Liu, host of Bloomberg TV’s “In the Loop,” attributes her edge in the workplace to her language skills – she speaks Mandarin Chinese and some Cantonese. “It always sets you apart from the rest. Employers are always looking for that extra dimension,” says Liu. “If it wasn’t for my language skills, I wouldn’t have gotten my job as an international correspondent in […]

In Honor of Earth Day: Here’s How to Find a Green Job

Happy Earth Day! Now here’s how to find a green job… Much of the world marks the 41st annual Earth Day today. Amid increased warnings about climate change and long-standing calls to make our air and water cleaner, many employers have embraced efforts to improve the environment as part of their corporate social responsibility agendas. Whole industries and career paths have emerged to control the natural resources and energy we use, creating a new category of jobs with the label “green collar.” Green jobs aren’t just for environmentalists; they require people with construction, science, and engineering backgrounds, as well as […]

Resume Proofreading Tips

We all know how important it is to ensure the final resume product is perfect. This is one area that cannot afford to be overlooked. Oftentimes, you review the document so many times it starts to blur and you can miss something glaring. Having someone else check your resume and cover for you is a great way to make sure everything is perfect (The CDC offers resume critiques every day!). Before you do that though, here is a checklist for you to follow on your own: Spelling and Grammar: Perhaps the most egregious mistakes are made in these two areas. […]
