MIDE Field Trip Recap by Vladimir Stroe ’16

The first ever MIDE field trip took place Wednesday on the 30th of September. Professor Allen and Kedzior, alongside Missy Gutkowski from the School of Management and Emily Dietrich from the CDC led MIDE student to Johnson & Johnson, The CDM Group and to a networking event with Bucknell alumni.

After enduring NYC traffic, our first stop was at the Johnson & Johnson Global Strategic Design office. Michael Marquis ’96, general manager, and a senior designer, Tyson Thorne, both weighed in on how Johnson & Johnson remains innovative, how to start a career in design and how to effectively work with designers.

  • CDC Tip: When you are attending an event with speakers, looking them up on LinkedIn and analyzing their background will allow you to ask more insightful questions and establish a connection faster.

The second stop on the trip was at The CDM Group, where members of HR, account, creative and copy teams held a presentation on what working at the CDM Group entails and about the summer internship program. Advertising briefs were assigned to different groups of students who were tasked with developing strategy and tactics for brands.

  • CDC Tip: Having an elevator pitch ready lets the employer know what your strengths and interests are, helps start a conversation and makes you appear much more professional.

The last stop was a networking event where MIDE students were able to connect with alumni and talk about their career path and internships or jobs within their company. New graduates also shared about their transition into their workplace and on how the courses they took at Bucknell helped them excel in their career search and jobs.

  • CDC Tip: After attending a presentation or meeting someone, send them a thank-you email and follow-up if you are interested in a position or have questions. Networking is a great way to to be on the recruiting team’s radar when opportunities arise.

All in all, the field trip was a great way to learn more about companies in the marketing industry and a great way to start a professional relationship with employers.
