Alumni Career Spotlight: John McPherson ’83, Cartoonist and Writer

McPhersonJohn McPherson ’83, majored in Mechanical Engineering and English and is now a successful cartoonist and creator of Close to Home. He will be on campus giving a talk followed by an informal dinner open to students and faculty.

His lecture, “Cartooning, Creativity, and Humor,” is open to the public. The talk will address the different skills that the two majors gave him, both as an engineer and later as a cartoonist and illustrator. He will also talk about how he got started as a cartoonist, and how he made the transition from life as an engineer to life as a cartoonist. In addition, he will present some of his work and explain how he comes up with ideas. He’ll also read letters from angry readers and the cartoons that prompted them, as well as weird letters that he’s received from fans and celebrities. He’ll also show cartoons that were killed by his editor. There will be time for questions after his talk.

At the dinner with students and faculty (following the lecture at 5 p.m.), he will discuss how the two majors differed and what different skills they gave him that helped him as both an engineer and later as a cartoonist and illustrator. RSVP for the dinner required on the BRIDGE
