They say you don’t know what you don’t know so we’ve put together a list of some of the opportunities available at, or through, Bucknell for students interested in internships and opportunities in a variety of fields in “the arts” that we hope you will find helpful as you begin your search process.

Arts Internships and Opportunities

Arts and Creativity Grants:

• There is available support for students of all majors to conduct creative projects, serious art projects, and/or research in the arts throughout the year. Grants can include travel and reach $2500.
  • Applications are accepted on the last day of each month, e.g. September 30th, October 31st, November 30th, etc.
  • Apply to the Bucknell Arts Council
  • For a summer or a year long grant, apply by April 1st the previous year

Samek Art Museum Fellowship and Guides

• The Museum Fellowship is offered for recent college graduates interested in pursuing a museum career. The fellowship offers professional training in arts administration and is designed to help fellows support their academic and career goals through supervised work experiences. Under the supervision of the Samek Art Museum director and chief curator, the fellow has the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of the Museum’s programs and operations. This is a 9-month (Sep-May) fellowship for one year with the possibility of a second year. This fellowship is a commitment of an average of 20 hours/week (except holidays and University recesses.)

• The Samek Art Museum is dedicated to providing valuable museum learning opportunities and operational experience to our students. The Samek and Downtown Gallery Guides are trained to lead visitors through our permanent collection and special exhibitions. Each Guide is trained to greet and offer resources to our audiences. In addition, these Guides serve as gallery attendants, responsible for monitoring our spaces and securing the safety of our exhibitions.

The Rooke Chapel Organ Assistance Fund

• The Fund was established by Natalie D. and Robert C. Rooke, the income to be awarded to one or more students taking organ lessons and/or working with the chapel organist to provide music for chapel functions.

The Juliet Shield-Taylor Undergraduate Theatre Summer Research Grant

• Supports sophomore and junior theatre majors, as well as serious performance, dance or design students, in developing their artistry in the performing arts during the summer months. The grant supports tuition for performance and design/technical programs or for work within various internship and apprentice programs at established summer festivals and regional theatres. Contact the Theater and Dance Department for more information.
  • Applications due early February

Balakian Summer Arts Experience Grant

• Supports students studying art and art history, music, and creative writing, in pursuing high-­‐ impact, structured, off-campus experiences in the arts, such as summer courses and workshops. The fund will support students’ travel, work experiences, research, and participation in the experience. Contact the Art and Art History Department, the Music Department or Creative Writing  Program.

Creative Writing Opportunities

June Poets:

• Recently rechristened the Bucknell Seminar for Undergraduate Poets, the Seminar is now under the direction of alumna K. A. Hays. (The program was formerly known as the Seminar for Younger Poets). Held for three weeks in June, the Seminar provides an extended opportunity for undergraduate poets to write and to be guided by established poets. Staff and visiting poets conduct writing workshops and offer lecture/discussions, present readings of their own work, and are available for individual conferences. Numerous readings provide the participants with the opportunity to hear and be heard by their peers. Applicants compete for ten places in the Seminar, all of which come with fellowships. Fellowships include tuition, housing in campus apartments, and meals. Accepted students are responsible only for their travel to Bucknell and a modest library deposit. A limited number of travel scholarships are available. See Frequently Asked Questions for eligibility and application guidelines.
  • Dates for the 2018 Seminar are June 9 – June 30.
  • The application postmark deadline is Jan. 31, 2018.

Cynthia Fell Internship: Academic Year

• This internship is open to students from any major. No former experience in publishing is necessary to apply. The internship will teach you about all aspects of publishing scholarly books. It will require 6 hours of work per week, occasionally off-campus. Since the internship offers course credit, the intern will be expected to complete one or two substantial projects for evaluation during the course of each semester. Interested students are requested to submit a letter of application, resume, two letters of recommendation from professors and/or previous employers (at Bucknell or elsewhere), and an academic transcript.

Film/Media Studies—Campus Theatre Internship

• The Film/Media Studies Program offers a competitive 0.5 credit, non-paid internship for qualified sophomores, juniors or seniors interested in learning about film exhibition and building career skills in that field. The internship focuses on film and digital cinema projection with the goal of developing real world skills in the art and craft of superior film presentation. Interns will be trained to project 35mm film and DCP; after an extended apprenticeship, interns will work independently as projectionists for Bucknell screenings at the Campus Theatre. Additionally interns will assist with a range of duties associated with the coordination of Film/Media Program screenings, as described above. This internship provides valuable experience to those interested in careers in moving image exhibition and film/media production.

West Branch Publishing Internship

• The West Branch Publishing Internship offers hands-on experience in the editing and production of West Branch, Bucknell’s professional literary journal. The internship is most relevant for students interested in creative writing, contemporary literature, and the literary publishing industry. This non-paid, for-credit internship is open to undergraduates of any major.
