Talk by Michael Popp ’08: An American in Shanghai – Feb 9

We are happy to be co-sponsoring this great event! If you aren’t headed to our NYC Communications & Arts Fair on February 9th consider attending a talk by Michael Popp ’08 on “An American in Shanghai: A Bucknellian’s perspective of contemporary China from his first-hand experience of studying, living and working there for 8 years. ”

This talk is the kick off of the Spring 2017 Semester for The China Institute at Bucknell. The event will be held on February 9 at 4:00pm in the Bertrand Library Traditional Reading Room.

More about Michael: Michael Popp graduated from Bucknell with an economics degree in 2008. He developed expertise in U.S.-China relations through eight years of professional and cultural experiences in China. At the age of 22, he traveled to China on his own and spent the next five years living and working in six different cities across the country, including Shanghai & Hangzhou. During this period, he studied Chinese at three universities, worked as the first ever U.S. employee in three Chinese companies, and owned and operated a bar and restaurant. He opened up the northern Zhejiang market to his Pennsylvania-based hardwood lumber supply partners, negotiated the acquisition of U.S. animal rendering machinery to equip five active rendering plants across China, and led the advancement of micro-brew American beer into new markets outside of the Shanghai market, all on the way to establishing and selling a successful American-style bar that is still in operation in China.

In 2013, Michael was featured by China Central TV for his entrepreneurial leadership in restoring foreign business presence in the ancient town of Nanxun. He went on to earn distinction in the Master of Commerce program at the University of Western Australia in Perth. After returning to the U.S., he has worked with over 200 early-stage global companies in promoting cause-marketing initiatives as he led Global Business Development at Trees for the Future. He is currently the CEO of Pacific Compass LLC, an international education consultancy that works to promote cross-cultural learning between China and the U.S. through educational exchanges.
