Values & Career Choice Happiness – Part 2

Weaving your core values into your work life will help keep you on a path to success as well as happiness.  Here are some steps to make that happen:

Research:

  • Conduct Informational Interviews- Talk with people to learn more about their specific roles as well as the companies/organizations that they are a part of and see if you feel comfortable with what is being said.
  • Do a deep-dive into an organization- Review their mission statement, annual report, and social media accounts to see what they value most.

Prepare:

  • “Tell me about yourself” is a common question when connecting- Practice weaving in your values, skills, and interests so networking connections and interviewers get an accurate and genuine sense of who you are as an employee.
  • Review your documents- Check that your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile are congruent with the person you are in an interview.

Launch:

  • Target the companies and roles that align with your values.  Follow on social media, network with current employees and keep current about what the organization is doing.  When the opportunity is there, you will be ready to apply quickly.

Reflect:

  • Just like our interests change over time and we develop new skills, our values need to be reviewed as well.  We often see shifts in some core values after both positive and challenging life events.  What once contributed to your happiness may not any more. If something feels off, take time to reflect and think about what you really want and what’s most important to you.
