This weeks BRIGE Peer Pick by Sophie Hattery ’16, CDC Marketing and Social Media Specialist, is for targeted to Seniors:
The American Society of Magazine Editors is happy to present the Magazine Internship Program, a ten-week program targeting college seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA at magazines concentrated in New York and Washington. This program has been renowned as a feeder for many to go on to continue with successful careers in print and electronic journalism.
If this internship intrigues you, make a resume and one-page cover letter (addressed to Nina Fortuna, Director, ASME) stating why you are interested in magazine journalism, why you want to participate in the Magazine Internship Program, and what qualifies you to be an ASME intern. You must also have a letter of recommendation from an educator who can attest to your abilities and experience, in addition to a letter of recommendation from an intern supervisor or employer who can attest to your abilities and experience.
The internship will take place in May of 2014 at ASME in New York. All ASME interns are expected to attend orientation, including interns assigned to magazines outside of New York. Orientation concludes on Friday, May 31. ASME interns begin work at their assigned magazines on June 3; the Magazine Internship Program concludes on Friday, August 2.
If you are worried about living in New York, ASME offers a minimum of $350 a week in comparison with most internships which do not pay anything. While you must pay for your own travel, housing, meals, and personal expenses, interns can apply to live at NYU in their dormitories for a cheaper cost! If logistics and your interests align, be sure to apply to the BRIDGE by Sunday, December 1st!
