Sophie’s Picks:
1. Third Millennium Alliance Winter Permaculture & Research Internship

2. A Taste of L’Oreal

For this week’s first peer pick, I chose the Winter Permaculture & Research Internship in the Rainforest of Ecuador. I know that many of us wrestle with wanting to travel over breaks but also bolster our number of experiences and continue on our career path – why not have both?

Tailored to those majoring in either Animal Behavior, Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, International Relations, Latin American Studies, Managing for Sustainability, or Spanish with a GPA above 2.5, this internship in Jama, Ecuador seeks to accomplish many big goals. Third Millennium Alliance wants to complete flora and fauna research, to set up a camera trap survey of wild felines and monkey troops, as well as to investigate endangered avifauna. They also want to create green buildings constructed from natural, recycled, and sustainable building materials and re-floor the field station with bamboo. As for reforestation, they seek to keep up the precedent of planting 6,500 trees within their plot and help increase food production, crop zonification, plant propagation, and food preservation.

As for those of you more geared towards the engineering side, you will have the opportunity to work with natural materials to build home appliances, to design and build a non-electrical refrigerator, and to design and build a solar food dehydrator. If all of this sounds like the ideal winter break to you, do not forget to apply by Monday, November 4th on the BRIDGE!

My second peer pick is targeted for juniors who want to learn about an innovative, fast-paced global company, namely L’Oreal. Based in New York City, this internship opens up the world of brand management, corporate finance, and sales. If you secure this internship, you will have the chance to network with senior executives, partake in a business case challenge, and interview for a position in the summer internship program!

L’Oreal is infamous for its makeup, hair, and skin care products. Many famous women such as Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, and Lea Michele work as spokes models and associate the company with the image of promoting strong, successful, beautiful women. The company’s main goal is denoted as, “providing affordable luxury for people who demand excellence in beauty… because you’re worth it”.

During the entirety of this weekend (January 24-26), L’Oreal will be picking up the tab for meals, hotel accommodations, and all weekend activities (added bonus!). Be sure to apply by Sunday, November 10th!
